Here are 12 more fantastic pictures of the Standard Railroad of America. As an independent railroad from 1846 to 1969, the PRR was the largest line in the United States based on traffic and revenue. Chartered in Pennsylvania in 1846, construction began in 1847 with the first all-rail line reaching Pittsburgh in 1852. In the 1860's, the line gained access to Baltimore, stretched north to New York City in the 1870s, and eventually connected Chicago with Washington, DC.
