The Daylight Steam Locomotive Attended Train Festival 2009 in Owosso Michigan to the delight of 40,000 fans. Excursions were pulled on two separate days and cab tours were available on Saturday and Sunday. Many were deeply touched to see this legend return after 34 years when she was last here for the American Freedom Train.

The Worlds Most Famous Steam Locomotive traveled from its home in Portland, OR 2500 miles to Owosso, MI for Americas Largest Celebration of Railroading in July. Southern Pacific steam locomotive no. 4449 known as the Daylight appeared at TrainFestival 2009 in Owosso, MI July 23-26. The massive undertaking to organize this train was jointly coordinated by The Steam Railroading Institute of Owosso, MI, The Friends of the 4449 of Portland, OR and The Friends of the 261 of Minneapolis, MN.

Tuesday, October 20 was the end of the third cross-country outing by a locomotive that is 68 years old. We hope you get the opportunity to see and hear what super power steam is all about.

Milwaukee 261 News:

News Flash! The Friends of the 261 have pulled it off. An agreement was reached to purchase the locomotive from the museum at Green Bay on May 2 with the plan to restore her to operation as soon as the work can be completed on her boiler. Using much needed cash that had been earmarked for restoration, a purchase was made instead which leaves the Friends in need of your support more than ever. Their fine fleet of privately maintain cars will be used where needed on lease but one thing is for sure; This is a fine family of railroaders who have brought so much to so many, do not count them out. Two exciting trips were run the first two weekend in May. If you were lucky enough to see or ride, you saw a splendid display of power, speed and dedication. What a trip!

UP 844 and 3985:

Yet another bit of sad news in the passing of locomotive engineer and concessions manager Lynn Nystrom on May 4. Lynn had been on top of his game, working the trip to Texas and back and related how he had fired for Steve on part of the trip. It was just like the old times he told me. After dinner that evening, he suffered a massive coronary and went to that big roundhouse in the sky leaving us all in shock. Lynn will be missed by many and leaves big shoes to fill.
